If you have copies of the songs you want to sing on your Mac and the necessary software, you may be able to play karaoke on your very own computer.

Steps

Open your GarageBand app. It ought to be on your dock; if not, go to Macintosh HD > Applications > GarageBand.

If your Mac doesn’t have an integrated microphone, then connect your microphone now to the USB port.

Navigate to the Media window.

Select and drag the song you want to the window.

Go to “Control” and deselect “Metronome.”

When ready, hit the record button (the red circle.)

Sing your heart out!

Tips

Compare the score by listening to the whole thing again. If the tone/pitch matches, count that as a few points

This method does not actually score your singing; you will have to judge your performance for yourself.

Don’t cough into the microphone(s), or drop them.

Warnings

Don’t hold the microphone(s) near a speaker, as this will cause feedback.

Things You’ll Need

A Mac (Intel or PowerPC)

GarageBand (included with the iLife suite)

A microphone (if your Mac does not have an integrated microphone)

Whether you’re looking to be “discovered,” hoping to win cool prizes, or just seeking some recognition of your awesome vocal talents, karaoke contests are a great way to test yourself. While these competitions offer a chance to see some great performers (and some not-so-great ones, too), and have an outrageously good time, they’re even more fun if you win. How do you do it? Read on, and go ahead and imagine a little ball jumping over the words as you do.

Steps

Practice singing. No matter what else you do, it’s important to be able to carry a tune and sing on pitch. While you need not be the “best” singer at the competition, and you certainly don’t need to be professionally trained, those things won’t hurt you. Karaoke contests are usually judged on some combination of vocal ability, audience response, and stage presence, but if you can nail the singing part, the judges may give you some leeway on other aspects of your performance. The best way to practice karaoke is to sing karaoke.

Learn your songs by heart. Most karaoke contests allow you to pick your own songs, and if you’re going to win, you should have practiced these time and time again. Yes, the words are right there on the screen, but if you know the words and have perfect timing, you don’t even have to look at the screen. Not only will your overall performance be more masterful, you may impress the judges and audience with your knowledge of the songs. An elimination round in a contest is a bad time to find out that you can’t pull off a particular song.

Understand the format of the contest. Karaoke contests are usually either judged by a panel of judges or by the audience. In some of the latter, the audience will actually formally vote, while in most a judge or judges will try to gauge the audience’s reaction to a song. You also want to know how you’re being judged. Most contests are based on overall performance, but some look strictly at how well you impersonate the artist (or how original you are), or other factors. Finally, know how many songs you’ll be expected to sing so you’ll have enough prepared in advance.

Follow the rules. Some contests require that you sing a particular kind of music (80s rock only, for example), or that you appear in costume. Make sure to follow the rules or you probably won’t win even if you give the best performance.

Extend courtesy to other performers. Yes, other performers are your competition, but don’t try to malign them or mock them, even if someone really can’t sing. Be polite, and unless the rules dictate otherwise, applaud everybody. Remember you will very likely be judged on your audience’s reaction to your songs, and many of your competitors are part of the audience. They won’t treat a heckler kindly.

Cater to the audience (or the judges). Above all, sing to the audience, not to the karaoke screen. Beyond that, know your audience. Understanding your audience will help you choose songs that most appeal to them. If you haven’t been to a venue before, you might want to visit it in advance to check out the crowd and see what they’re playing on the jukebox. On the night of the competition, try to gauge the judges’ or audience’s reaction to songs and see if you can spot trends (maybe they hate love songs), and choose your songs accordingly if you still can.

Sing a song to showcase your range and talents. There are a lot of songs that just about anybody can sing passably, but if you’ve got an exceptional vocal range or if you can rap just like Snoop (rap is notoriously difficult to karaoke) choose songs that reflect that. If you want to awe the audience–and you do–you need a great performance of a difficult song.

Develop stage presence. People come to karaoke (or to concerts) to see a performance, not just to hear one. Don’t just stand there and sing, and don’t act like you don’t know what to do during an instrumental interlude. Convey the emotions of the song with your facial gestures and body movements, and by all means dance if appropriate. Get some ideas by watching concert videos of professional performers. If you can find a video of the original artist performing the song you’re going to sing, all the better.

Dress the part. Your attire can help the judges remember you, especially if you go to a themed competition or if you’re only singing certain kinds of songs. If you’re going to sing glam rock, dress like a glam rocker, or maybe dress like a country singer to add a bit of humor to your performance.

Be true to the original. Even if it’s subconscious, most people judge a karaoke performance by how close it sounds to the original. It’s amazing when someone gets up to sing a Garth Brooks song and you could swear they were just lip-syncing to a CD of Garth himself. While you need not be a professional voice impersonator, try to fit the mood and style of the song (i.e. add a bit of twang to a country song).

Add your own twist. Musicians who cover a song can alter it all they want. You don’t have that luxury because the karaoke music is designed to sound just like the original version. That said, there’s a little room for creativity. For example, try inserting the name of a local landmark in place of one mentioned in the song. This can have a humorous effect and is likely to get a rise out of the audience.

Relax and have a good time. If you have a problem with stage fright, you’ve got to learn to suppress it. There are a number of ways to do this, but probably the best is to fight it by singing a lot of karaoke. Don’t take yourself too seriously up there, and even if you’re nervous, show the audience that there’s nothing you’d rather be doing.

Be a good winner (or loser). If you win, congratulations! Now be gracious. If you don’t win, don’t mope, don’t make excuses, and don’t get mad about how “the contest was fixed.” You’ll likely see these people again if you continue to compete in karaoke contests, and you want to leave them with a good impression of you.

Tips

Nothing beats actually going out to karaoke nights for practice, but you can also practice at home on your own karaoke equipment, or you can find lyrics and karaoke MIDI files on the Internet.

If you have an Xbox 360, Wii, Playstation 2 or PlayStation 3 system, rent or buy Rock Band or Rock Band 2 (the latter has a no-fail mode) and get any USB microphone, and start a vocalist career. Start with Easy and move up as you learn. This software provides the correct tone and pitch and shows where you’re at. Change the settings to turn down the vocal track, the crowd noise, and sound effects, and turn up the mic – this will turn the software into a true karaoke platform. (Do not, however, use Guitar Hero: World Tour as its vocal interpreter is basically broken and it will rate you far worse than you actually are. Not to mention Rock Band 2 will tell you how hard a song is to sing; Guitar Hero: World Tour will not.)

When you’re practicing, have a friend or two go with you to karaoke and honestly critique your performances. You can’t always judge your performance accurately, and unless you’re in a competition, it’s tough to get a good idea of how well you’re really doing.

Get hydrated well in advance. Drink plenty of water before the competition, and maintain your hydration throughout. Nothing can sabotage your singing like a dry mouth.

Choose songs that most everybody knows. People generally get into a song that they recognize and like. Obscure songs aren’t off limits, but only choose one if you have a good reason (i.e. if you can yodel well, you might want to choose a less well-known song with an amazing yodeling part).

Watch what you eat before and during the event! Cream based foods, like dips and sauces, can coat your throat and make singing more challenging. Also be aware of dry foods, like tortilla chips, that can create a “tickle” and make you need to clear your throat.

Warnings

Don’t sing a long song or one that repeats itself a lot. If your performance leaves something to be desired, a long song will really wear on the audience. Even if you have a great performance, though, people tend to get bored with a song that’s too long or that’s just the same thing over and over.

Be careful about alcohol. “Liquid courage” is the very fuel that keeps most karaoke nights running, and the performances in these venues generally reflect that. In a competition, you’ll find that many people, maybe most, don’t drink at all. If you do want to loosen up with a couple drinks, don’t go overboard.

Don’t sing a song that somebody else has already sung. This invites a direct comparison with somebody else, and you’d better be sure that all aspects of your performance will beat theirs hands down before attempting it.

Don’t choose a song that’s overdone. While you want a song that’s familiar to people, you don’t necessarily want to sing one of those songs that you are almost guaranteed to hear at any karaoke night you visit. People tend to tire of the same old song and dance.

There are some widely accepted and observed Rules of Karaoke Etiquette you should keep in mind when you’re out having fun singing:

Respect the Singer. Remember that each singer has awaited his or her turn to sing. Don’t get up and sing along with them unless they ask for your help. It’s also bad manners to sing so loudly from your table that you can be heard above them. The same holds for groups. Talking so loud that the singer cannot hear the music or be heard by the audience is just plain rude.

Drinking and Smoking. Don’t bring drinks or cigarettes (in states which allow smoking in karaoke bars) to the stage.

Singing While Drunk. While you might need a little “liquid courage” to get up to sing, please don’t sing while you’re obviously drunk. You might think you sound wonderful, but you probably don’t.

Applaud Everyone. No matter how talented the singer, offer your applause when he or she finishes performing. Even if the singer was off-key, it took courage to get up and sing. Besides, karaoke is more about fun than about having a professional talent level. Making fun of the singer reflects badly on you.

Respect the rotation. Don’t sign up more than one song at a time, try to sign up under different names or to sing multiple times with various duet partners. KJs try hard to keep the rotation fair and to see everyone gets to sing. Other singers get more than a little annoyed if you’ve sung twice before they’ve gotten to sing once. Trying to muck up the rotation may get you banned from singing at that venue.

Respect the Equipment and Your Audience. Never scream into the microphone or swing it around by the cord. Not only doesn’t it make you look cool, but the microphone could disconnect from the cord and hit someone. This practice is damaging to expensive equipment. And don’t scream into the microphone for any reason. It’s childish and painful to the audience.

Support Your Venue. Let the place holding karaoke know you appreciate and support karaoke by purchasing food and beverages. They have to pay the KJ and, sometimes, purchase disks and equipment. If you sit and drink water all night, every night, they’re not making any money and may decide karaoke isn’t a good idea. So support your venue!

Remember Your Bartender, Servers and KJ. If you like the service and your KJ is doing a good job, remember to tip them. It’s a tangible way to let them know you appreciate their good service.

Keeping good manners when you go out to sing make karaoke an enjoyable experience for everyone.

What are the songs you feel are best to get the crowd going? I’d like to find some new stuff to do. I have a handful, but some I like to do are Queen Fat Bottomed Girls, 4 Non Blonds Whats Up, Bette Midler At Last, Golden Earring Radar Love and Van Hallen Panama (note that I’m a guy doing a couple chick songs – people get a kick out of this)

Because they are so old and drawn out seems to be why they are such crowd pleasers. We may hate them for how often they are done, but they keep getting done because the crowd typically loves to do/hear them. I’ll do Walk sometimes, Metallica Fuel is a good one. System of a Down too.

Well, I don’t have Sympathy For The Devil, but it is played locally and gets better than a ho-hum reaction. It might be a reflection, as you say, that not too many libraries have the song?

As to crowd pleasers, clearly the appeal of any song is a matter of geographic/demographic considertions.

What maybe a crowd pleaser in a country bar could understandably go unnoticed in a rock bar. What may get heads turning in an urban bar would fall flat in a country bar. And so on. Shouldn’t be a surprise

And finally there is the mix of patrons. Most karaoke places I frequent do not have a “homogenous” audience (all country or all rock or all urban). So, it depends

And while, for example, I have heard KJ’s refer to “Sweet Caroline” as a sing-a-long, because some people chime in with “ho-ho-ho”, most every time “Family Tradition” is sung around these parts there is even a more enthusiastic audience response!

I think I would have to say that for my shows if a song goes over well it has a lot more to do with it being performed and sung well than the specific song.

While most of my crowd is into indie rock, Bowie and 80s music. An occasional song from something else from metal to country and all other directions can bring the house down if done well. I can recall plenty of occasions where the most memorable and most applauded song of the night was unexpected in style or music genre.

I have seen many times a song bring the house down when performed well, and then be a ho-hum sleeper when done by someone else on a different night, but with a similar crowd.

If anything trying to do a song that someone else has done exceptionally well in the last few shows tends to be a ho-hum affair in crowd reaction if not done better. Most of the people at my shows are less appreciateve of a good song performed so-so or worse, than an obscure or less successful song performed well.

Other crowds may have different tastes, but this is a generality for my shows.

Ah the nineties! All the cringe of the eighties with none of the talent. You’d wake up in the morning with your greasy sun-in hair, throw on a flannel shirt, a pair of light blue baggy or ripped jeans, clip on the ol’ wallet chain, and slip into your green colored Doc Martens. And as you slammed your Pogs and snapped your Slap Bracelet, you might have been listening to one of these… (Page me when you’re done enjoying the tunes.)

OMC – How Bizarre

In 2002, How Bizarre was named the 71st greatest one-hit wonder of all time on VH1 countdown. Interestingly, the debut single of the New Zealand group was not allowed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, as it was released to radio and not as a retail single. In 1997 and 1998, How Bizarre spent 36 weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100 Airplay chart, at #4. OMC sold an estimated three to four million records worldwide, the biggest selling New Zealand recorded and signed record ever. By mid-1995, OMC had broken up but lead singer, Pauly Fuemana used the group’s acronym as a solo artist. In January 2007 OMC released, in New Zealand, a new single, 4 All of Us, featuring Lucy Lawless on backing vocals.

Jimmy Ray – Are You Jimmy Ray?

The mean-a, lean-a, ain’t no in between-a, Jimmy Ray reached #13 on the U.S. Billboard Top 100 Chart in 1997, sold 500,000 copies in the U.S. alone and then disappeared-a. Who wants to know, who wants to know what he’s doing now? Ray has re-emerged as a member of the Airplayers song production team, helping to write “hit” songs for other people.

Divinyls – I Touch Myself

One of my favorite online karaoke tunes! When I hear this song, I touch myself. The Australian band hit #4 on the U.S. charts, and #1 spot in their native country in 1991. The song was written by Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg, also the writers of hit songs such as I’ll Stand by You, Like a Virgin, Eternal Flame and True Colors.

Chumbawamba – Tubthumping

“Tubthumping” ranked #12 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 20 Most Annoying Songs. Chumbawamba began their music career as an anarcho-punk band in 1982, but only gained international recognition with their hit single Tubthumping, when it was released in 1997. The single release went to #6 on Billboard’s Hot 100. The band later made a documentary, partly in order to update those who thought Tubthumper was their first album, with hours of footage from over the past two decades.

Right Said Fred – I’m Too Sexy

A playful jab at the fashion industry, the song may be ridiculous, but this 1991 mega hit by Right Said Fred made them the first band since The Beatles to reach the #1 slot in the U.S. with a debut single. Though the band has been considered a one-hit wonder in the U.S. they did go on to have several hits on British charts, including #1 single Deeply Dippy. They have been working on a comeback ever since. Fred opened a gym and Richard went on to present Gaytime TV on BBC2.

Los del Rio – Macarena

The Macarena ranked #1 in VH1’s 2002 documentary 100 Greatest One-hit wonders. The song was originally recorded in 1992, but became a worldwide hit in mid-1996 after it was remixed by the Bayside Boys with added English lyrics. The single spent 14 weeks on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. As of 1997, the song had sold 11 million copies and was played and danced at just about every wedding. According to BBC News Service, even ten years after the song’s initial release, the singers have made USD $250,000 in royalties.

Mm Yeah
See how shes lookin in my eyes
And youve got to give her that
She’s a beautiful girl and shes into me but Im too busy still looking back
Now I’m walking her to the door tryin’ to kiss her goodnight
Something inside just don’t feel right

My friends tell me I gotta give it up so I’ve been trying to move on
But my hearts apart and my heads not clear of the pictures from before you were gone
And I never wanna hurt no one
Tryin’ to forget your name
Something inside just don’t feel the same
Noo
She’s not you
And I don’t know what to say
But I’ll say it anyway
No matter what I do
I can’t believe the lie
And I just can’t see it through
0, she’s not you

Woke up in the middle of the night
Started reaching for the phone
And to take a breath and remind myself that you said you needed time alone
Didn’t know what I wanted then and I know I let you down
Baby I know what I gotta do now
She’s not you
And I don’t know what to say
But I’ll say it anyway
No matter what I do
I can’t believe the lie
And I just can’t see it through
She’s not you when she smiles
Not you when she wakes
Or you when she cries
Not you when she breaks
And I don’t want to hurt her
But I know that it’s true
She’s not you
Oooh woah oh, not you

At Buffalo’s Southwest Café in Hinesville, it’s not just hot food and cold drinks being served to customers. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights — with the exception of the occasional Friday night live band, such as this week’s SouthBound appearance—the casual eatery’s clientele are treated to hometown stars who like to sing their hearts out to some interesting karaoke songs.
Karaoke nights always close with a round of “Closing Time” by Semisonic, delivered by karaoke master Mike Blanchard, but manager Shane Smith and his crew were nice enough to dish out the top five tunes their moonlighting diners can’t seem to sing often enough.

• “Sittin’ At A Bar” by Rehab
This catchy but somewhat colorful tune tells the story of a young man who just can’t seem to avoid trouble with the law, or his lady love. So while he waits for his “ride,” he decides to have a cold one or two.

• “I’m On A Boat” by The Lonely Island featuring T-Pain
A silly, ratings-restricted rap song, “I’m On A Boat” celebrates the joys of living the good life and gettin’ down on—surprise—a boat. If you can make it past the coarse language, you might find the lyrics just ridiculous enough to be amusing.

• “Friends In Low Places” by Garth Brooks
This country favorite is less likely to offend delicate sensibilities, but it still celebrates the best of the nightlife, having some drinks with friends and toasting your old love to her new life — in your own special way.

• “Sex Is On Fire” by Kings of Leon
The title is titillating but the song is more subtle. The morphing intensity and passionate delivery make many an amateur pop star hop on the stage for a chance to belt this one.

• Anything by Stevie Nicks
Stevie Nicks’s quirky performances and personal life have induced some serious head-scratching, but onstage she’s a sight to behold and her haunting songs have captured many a soul. Who wouldn’t want to be on the Edge Of Seventeen for just one night?

The times I have gone to karaoke definitely number in the hundreds. Possibly thousands. I have gone to karaoke at dive bars, Thai food restaurants, fancy piano bars, my significant other’s work party, smoke-filled Chinese restaurants and hotel lobbies. Here is a good place to go for Karaoke Downloads.

I have noticed, regardless of whether karaoke is going on at a tiki bar, an Irish pub or a Mexican restaurant, the same songs always seem to end up in the rotation. Of course, it’s not guaranteed that you’ll hear these songs every time, but if you ever want to get into predictive karaoke gambling, get some quick personal loans and put your money on these.

10. ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’

Karaoke “regulars” don’t do this song. They know that it’s nine minutes long, and it’s kind of rude to take up that much time when other singers are waiting. However, a first-time karaoke singer who loves “Wayne’s World” and doesn’t know that he isn’t the first person to come up with this brilliant idea will inevitably get up and sing this.

9. ‘Black Velvet’

I can understand why “Black Velvet” gets so much stage time at karaoke joints. It’s fun to sing and considered cool in a rock-n-roll sort of way.

8. ‘Hey Jude’

Much like “Bohemian Rhapsody,” this song is a bit long as a karaoke selection. I think people forget that selecting “Hey Jude” ultimately means singing “na na na na na na na” for two minutes. It’s a great song, but if you ever sing it you’ll probably notice half the audience singing along and swaying while the other half checks their watches.

7. ‘Tiny Dancer’

Elton John songs are very common during karaoke, and “Tiny Dancer” seems to be the Elton John picker’s favorite.

6. ‘Summer Nights’

Songs from movie soundtracks, and specifically “Grease” songs, often make their way into the karaoke rotation, but none so often as “Summer Nights.”

5. ‘Hit Me with Your Best Shot’

For women who want to rock out, “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” by Pat Benetar is the go-to choice.

4. ‘Sweet Caroline’

Neil Diamond is, of course, a very popular choice at karaoke, especially when there’s a more mature crowd. “Sweet Caroline” is the most popular of the Neil Diamond selections. Multiply the popularity of Neil Diamond with the popularity of this particular song, and you end up hearing this song a lot when you’re a karaoke junkie.

3. ‘Friends in Low Places’

This Garth Brooks song is similar to the Neil Diamond situation. Popular artists plus popular song equals lots of people slurring along with the performer. It’s a crowd-pleaser.

2. ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’

For some reason that I can’t explain, people from all different demographics love to sing this song. I have heard people of all ages and both genders belt out, screech out and slur out this song. For some reason, really bad singers often choose this song. If you go to karaoke as much as I used to, this song will be ruined forever.

1. ‘Picture’

Every time a man and a woman get up to sing a duet together, I shudder because I know what’s coming. The first man/woman duet of the night, no matter where you are, is always “Picture.” I once saw a pair sing this song when there were only eight other people present. If you go to a public karaoke event, there is a 100 percent chance you will hear this song.

First things first. You want to get there early and snag a table with an excellent view of the humiliations- I mean, performances. Choose a place that serves ginormous beers on the cheap so you don’t miss having your name called by the DJ while ordering a beverage. You should occasionally have someone bring a round of shots by to lube the wind pipes your dignity.

Drink heavily and with purpose. You need to be bordering on sloppy drunk but perform justbefore going over the edge. Timing is of the essence here, people.

Now, the venue. It’s preferable if the place is extra shady; things like poor lighting and the stunted walls of an acoustically-challenged basement can only help you here, folks.

Next, you’re going to need a group of friends to share the pathetic experience with you. More is better because it increases the chances of anyone remembering anything. Less is better because it decreases the chances of anyone remembering anything. Either way, you should definitely choose them from the “Will Have to Love You Anyway” pile.

Now it’s song choice time. There are a few basic rules to this:

1. Make sure you know either 50% of the words or 100% of the beat. Make SURE. Just because you rocked City High’s “What Would You Do” in high school doesn’t mean you can do it now, friend. Trust.

2. Choose a song the whole bar will want to sing. Unless you’ve actually got serious skills, class participation is key to making everyone forget that you probably kind of blow at this. Also? Nothing downer, unless it’s hilarious, like All 4 One’s “I Swear.” No one wants to hear you wail out to T.L.C.’s ”Waterfall” or, God forbid, Oasis’ “Wonderwall.” Save that for the car. (Not applicable when driving in Southeast D.C.)

3. DO NOT choose one of the most cliché karaoke songs ever. It makes the bartender groan because you are now that person that put on “Friends in Low Places” or ”Don’t Stop Believin’” for the eleventy millionth time . I don’t care if it reminds you of college and a time when you didn’t know what IBS was. Do not be That Guy/Girl.

(…Let someone else do it. Because I guarantee they will, and then you get to sing it anyway. God, I love those songs.)

Once you take the stage, which should be earlier on the night (since you got there early for the great table, right? Trust me, you don’t want to have to follow anything awesome. You want to BE the awesome!)… anyhoo, you’re going to want to have a set of decent and/or ridiculous but wholly entertaining dance moves at your disposal. These will be helpful during musical interludes, places where you flat out forget lines or totally lose the beat, or to dodge items should they start, um… coming your way. (Remember the five D’s: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge!)

There’s really only one word you need to know to give a unique and memorable karaoke performance:

COMMITMENT.

Don’t half-ass it, folks. If you suck, suck royally. If you dance, dance your heart out. If you don’t know the words, sing louder. OWN your time on that stage, for better or for worse. Own it hard.

Whether you like it or not, friend, you’re putting on a show. You might as well make it epic… for better or for worse.
