OK, I’m sure this has been covered before, but maybe it is a good time to re-cap. As a KJ, it is mostly up to us to keep the energy high. What are the songs you feel are best to get the crowd going? I’d like to find some new stuff to do. I have a handful, but some I like to do are Queen Fat Bottomed Girls, 4 Non Blonds Whats Up, Bette Midler At Last, Golden Earring Radar Love and Van Hallen Panama (note that I’m a guy doing a couple chick songs – people get a kick out of this) What are your favorites? |

Definitely Barracuda by Heart. Also do What’s Up. Separate Ways by Journey (in fact, anything by Journey). Mercy by Duffy. |

Depends on the venue & crowd, however Bodies – Drowning Pool, Walk – Pantera, almost anything Metallica, almost anything Alice In Chains – these right off the top of my head are always hits at our shows. Actually some of the songs you list i’d put in the put them to sleep category. They’ve either been over done to death or not known. |

Hey, we’re country here. For me, a few are Some Girls Do (Sawyer Brown), Where the Stars and the Stripes (Aaron Tippin), Tall Tall Trees (Alan Jackson). For mellower crowds, Heard It In A Love Song (Marshall Tucker) and One Night At A Time (George Strait). |

Because they are so old and drawn out seems to be why they are such crowd pleasers. We may hate them for how often they are done, but they keep getting done because the crowd typically loves to do/hear them. I’ll do Walk sometimes, Metallica Fuel is a good one. System of a Down too. |

Funny as heck last night – a guy gets up and sings Barry White and the entire room jumps up and dances… I’m learning all of Lady Gaga’s stuff and definitely Bad Romance is a hit…as is Poker Face. Some females do Tik Tok … and Cowboy Casanova is loved by the crowds but not as easy to sing as some. Thanks for the doink on the head, JR – I guess I was thinking about what I sing on the spur of the moment if I want to jazz things up. Have to move Bad Romance to the top of that last. |

Hate to say it and we don’t do it ourselves but I have yet to see “Mustang Sally” fail to bring people to the dance floor. We had a guy do it that was so drunk he didn’t sing a word but just grunted “Huh” here and there throughout and people were still dancing to it. |

I have a rowdy crowd at my regular Friday night gig Led Zepplin Whole lotta love any old school rap, Sir Mix A-Lot, Vanilla Ice, Run DMC And always by request but late into the night 20 Fingers Don’t want no short (explicative) man. One of my regulars gets begged to sing this and her boyfriend gets out on the dance floor and does his little dance. The crowd has tears running down their cheeks from laughing so hard. |

Mustang Sally - RARE I don’t believe the question was in regard to how often any particular song is sung, but rather, the reaction of the crowd WHEN IT IS DONE. |

Yep and I was responding to the ones that I know get a response either way that I know of. All the others I couldn’t comment, but it is a surprising list as many of those I wouldn’t consider crowd pleasers. |

Well, I don’t have Sympathy For The Devil, but it is played locally and gets better than a ho-hum reaction. It might be a reflection, as you say, that not too many libraries have the song? As to crowd pleasers, clearly the appeal of any song is a matter of geographic/demographic considertions. What maybe a crowd pleaser in a country bar could understandably go unnoticed in a rock bar. What may get heads turning in an urban bar would fall flat in a country bar. And so on. Shouldn’t be a surprise And finally there is the mix of patrons. Most karaoke places I frequent do not have a “homogenous” audience (all country or all rock or all urban). So, it depends And while, for example, I have heard KJ’s refer to “Sweet Caroline” as a sing-a-long, because some people chime in with “ho-ho-ho”, most every time “Family Tradition” is sung around these parts there is even a more enthusiastic audience response! |

I think I would have to say that for my shows if a song goes over well it has a lot more to do with it being performed and sung well than the specific song. While most of my crowd is into indie rock, Bowie and 80s music. An occasional song from something else from metal to country and all other directions can bring the house down if done well. I can recall plenty of occasions where the most memorable and most applauded song of the night was unexpected in style or music genre. I have seen many times a song bring the house down when performed well, and then be a ho-hum sleeper when done by someone else on a different night, but with a similar crowd. If anything trying to do a song that someone else has done exceptionally well in the last few shows tends to be a ho-hum affair in crowd reaction if not done better. Most of the people at my shows are less appreciateve of a good song performed so-so or worse, than an obscure or less successful song performed well. Other crowds may have different tastes, but this is a generality for my shows. |

Someone sang Drunken Lullabies – Flogging Molly last night on a busier than normal Monday and the entire crowd was clapping to the beat and pounding on the tables to the beat – even had a handful on the dance floor doing mock riverdance type moves. But then almost everything done last night was getting everyone involved, that one just stood out more than the others. |
